How To Buy Your First HO Scale Model Train?

Model railroading can be hard to shop for, especially for the first time. For most model train lovers, their HO & O scale locomotives aren’t just a hobby but an extension of their personality. Actually one feels proud to tell that he owns a collection of expensive and antique styled model trains.

To avoid disappointments after buying a model train, Baxter Backshop has compiled few tips that can assist you in purchasing the right locomotive. Some of them are explained below:

1.    Research The Quality Brands

To make sure you purchase a superior quality locomotive made of corrosion resistant material, always go for leading brand names like K-Line, MTH, Lionel, and others.

2.    Consider The Train Size

Having a train in a different scale can be bit awkward. No matter how nice your O scale train looks when placed on the shelf, it is of no use until it fits the model railroad layout and track space needed. Smaller gauges offer more railroad in a smaller space. If you are not sure about the size of model locomotive you need, don’t consider buying it.

3.    Remember The Time & Place

A classic steam locomotive that functions on the railway may look beautiful, but it might look a little out of place if you are modeling a modern day railway. Though opting for your favorite material and style is a better choice, make sure you choose a genuine model or design.

4.    It’s Not Just Model Trains

Most people believe that model railroading is just about buying O & HO scale trains, whereas the reality is that a model railroad needs a lot more than just trains to be complete. It actually includes structures, figures, trees, cars, lights, and other accessories to design an amazing model layout.

These are the few things you need to consider while purchasing a model locomotive. If you are looking to purchase, sell, service or repair any O & HO scale model trains in Ontario, contact our expert modeler at Baxter Backshop.

Tips And Tricks For HO and O Scale Model Train Maintenance

The well known phrase “prevention is better than cure” is ideal for these mechanical movers. If you maintain them at least once in a month, the chances of expensive repairs and replacements can be greatly reduced.
HO and O scale model locomotives do require periodic lubrication and cleaning to ensure smooth and hassle free performance. By performing regular layout and equipment service, one can protect a model layout and train from damage and rust.

Some of the easy to achieve maintenance tasks are:

1. Cleaning tracks

Your model tracks can be cleaned using a” Scotch Brand” scrub cleaning pad that is available from most stores. These pads are highly abrasive and can remove any dirt and debris from the track. One can also opt for using liquid cleaners that can be sprinkled over the tracks and then rubbed using a clean cloth. To prevent the risk of corrosion it’s not recommended to use harsh cleaners. Moreover, if you are not using your trains very often, cover the layout using a protective sheet to keep dirt off of your tracks and scenery.

2. Lubricating wheels

All the moving parts of HO scale and O scale model trains should be lubricated at least a twice a year.
If you use your trains more often, consider lubricating them more frequently. To prevent grime built up, always clean off old lubrication before lubricating them.  Apply a little lubricant grease or oil and clean off the excess to avoid attracting dust. This is also a good time to check that the wheels are properly aligned and free of damage.

3. Inspect couplings

With prolonged usage locomotive couplings tend to become loose or damaged, often leading to derailments. To prevent this issue, check the height, swing and bindings of a coupling using a coupler height gauge.  A coupler should swing freely, trip pins should be at the proper height to clear switches and coupler springs should not be missing, broken or binding.
These are the few simple tips to maintain an HO and O scale model trains and locomotives. If you are looking for train repair and maintenance service, contact our professionals at Baxter Backshop, Ontario.
